FICHIER: 12 NICCOLO SIX SCENES FROM THE GENESIS.jpg
DESCRIPTION: 12 NICCOLÒ Six Scenes from the Genesis (active c. 1120-1150) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Six Scenes from the Genesis c. 1138 Stone San Zeno, Verona Send this picture as postcard Friendly format for printing and bookmarking The picture shows a detail of the south portal of the Church San Zeno in Verona. Master Niccolò signed the cathedral façade in Ferrara in 1137; it is assumed that he had been a pupil of Wiligelmus in Modena previously. Niccolò's works seem to be inspired less by the Classical period than by his predecessor, though they scarcely match his power of expression. Nonetheless, his figures have a special vividness which also comes through in the garments they wear. Niccolò also worked in Verona; pieces in the church of San Zeno, and in particular the jamb figures on the cathedral's portal are ascribed to him and his workshop. The latter figures, like those in Ferrara, have a strange, largely unexplained affinity with the early Gothic jamb figures in France.
