  16 EL GRECO THE VISITATION.jpg - 16 El Greco The Visitation 1610-14 Oil on canvas, 97 x 71 cm Dumbarton Oaks, Washington Possibly a study for the circular painting in the vault of the Chapel of Oballe, San Vicente, Toledo, above the Immaculate Conception of the high altar, specified in the contract. It does seem that the painting was originally within a circle, and that the canvas has been cut at the left and right. It may well be the last work produced by the master, and the larger painting for the vault may never have been finished. The choice of subject of the Visitation is a reference to the name of the foundress of the Chapel, Isabel de Oballe. The process of dematerialisation is complete. There are only shapes, colour and light and the strange quality of the movement - of the 'meeting of two celestial bodies' (Camón Aznar, Dominico Greco, 1950). ....Web Gallery Of Art
